Supermarket Gets Shoppers Excited About Gourmet Cheese with “Fromage Fantastique” Event

West Seattle Thriftway, an independent grocer located at the heart of West Seattle’s Morgan Junction, is proud of their gourmet cheese department. It’s no wonder why—Americans are crazy about cheese.

Most consume 35 pounds of cheese each year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a 43 percent increase over the past 25 years. Per capita spending on cheese has also increased 37 percent since 2008, as more consumers enjoy cheese for its flavor and nutritional benefits.

When the supermarket wanted to showcase what they offered, the company came up with a creative idea: a first-ever “Fromage Fantastique” sale with all cheese 25 percent off for three days in conjunction with in-store cheese tastings. The store’s deli hosted over 23 active demos of gourmet cheese and cheese accompaniments while handing out “Rip Cards” to promote the event. An initial 250 were produced—and all were given out—so an additional 300 were created.

Through a seamless fusion of electronic, print, and social media marketing, it turned out to be a fun and highly successful event. In fact, the gourmet cheese department sales saw a 48 percent increase in sales over the same weekend the year before. Not only did it boost sales and build customer loyalty—West Seattle Thriftway gained recognition as a leader in the supermarket industry. The supermarket beat dozens of entries to be recognized for the year’s best merchandiser award in the perimeter department category at The NGA Show 2017.
