Statement on Tariffs from NGA’s President & CEO Greg Ferrara

Washington D.C. – The National Grocers Association (NGA), the leading national trade association representing independent supermarket retailers, released the following statement from NGA President & CEO Greg Ferrara:

“The National Grocers Association (NGA) encourages ongoing dialogue between the U.S. and its global trading partners to promptly address trade concerns while minimizing disruptions for American consumers and independent grocers, who continue to face inflationary pressures. NGA recognizes that tariffs can be powerful tools in trade and foreign policy; however, broad tariffs on all imported goods, including essential food products, packaging materials, and transportation components, risk exacerbating financial pressures for American families and independent grocers alike.

A balanced and strategic approach is crucial to stabilizing grocery prices. We thank President Trump and congressional leaders for their efforts in eliminating bureaucratic regulations that would have significantly hindered independent grocers’ ability to provide reliable access to affordable, fresh food to the communities they serve.

As the Administration engages in critical global trade negotiations, we strongly urge the president and Congress to take decisive action to help offset any price increases by addressing the most significant cost drivers for independent grocers and consumers — skyrocketing credit card ‘swipe fees,’ lax enforcement of our antitrust laws, and the many onerous regulations that still pose a danger to Main Street supermarkets nationwide.”
