Arlington, VA -The National Grocers Association (NGA), the national trade association representing the independent supermarket industry, today released the following statement from Greg Ferrara, NGA executive vice president of advocacy, public relations and member services on the SCOTUS stay decision involving the FMI v. Argus Leader case.

“We are disappointed, to see the stay denied in the Argus Leader case.  Once this information is released there is no way to undo the harm that will be done to many local grocers.   In an intensely competitive marketplace, such as the retail food industry, any public disclosure of this private information will give competitors an unfair advantage, particularly over many small and medium size grocers.  At a time when many rural and small communities are losing food stores that sell a wide selection of fresh and perishable foods, this action will likely only make this trend worse. This deny underscores the importance of advancing a legislative solution to this problem that will protect store-level SNAP data from public disclosure.”
