Washington, D.C. – President Trump recently posted that he was directing the Department of Justice to investigate alleged price fixing and possible monopolistic behaviors that are impacting consumers. NGA issued the following statement from its chief government relations officer and counsel, Chris Jones:

The National Grocers Association believes the best way to lower prices for consumers is through fair and competitive markets, kept in check through robust antitrust enforcement.

Decades of consolidation in sectors like meat processing have concentrated power, reduced competition, and driven up costs for shoppers and small businesses alike. Enforcing existing antitrust laws, including the Robinson-Patman Act, can help restore balance and promote a fairer, more competitive marketplace that benefits consumers and local communities alike.
We commend the Administration and the Department of Justice for their focus on promoting fair competition and look forward to working with policymakers to strengthen enforcement that benefits consumers, farmers, and Main Street grocers.
