STUDENT SUCCESS STORIES: ‘Share Your Passion and Purpose’

June 11, 2020

By Jenna DeLoria, Saint Joseph’s University, Class of 2020

I am a graduating senior studying food marketing at Saint Joseph’s University. I am writing to share my experience at the 2020 NGA Show, with feedback on what my generation is looking for, not only as grocery consumers but also in future employers.

Walking the Floor: Students were assigned mentors to help guide them during the experience. Our mentors walked the show floor with us. answering questions and pointing out the highlights. My peers and I were fascinated not only by the interesting products but also by the services that support the grocery industry. For example, we spent time at the booth of a supplier that promised to save labor hours with its shelving designs. What caught our eye most frequently was unique flavors. Overall, walking the floor was a great way for students to see how many elements support the grocery industry.

Student Case Study Competition: Universities from around the country participated in this competition. Teams were given the case in December and presented their solution to groups of judges over three days. The goal in this case study was to grow produce sales at Buehler’s (an Ohio-based independent grocery chain) by expanding its base of Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients and encouraging them to make healthier choices. We heard students speak with passion and excitement about access to healthy eating. NGA should feel confident in the talent interested in the industry!

Student Product Share-Out: This year for the first time, students walked the show and chose products that were attractive to our generation. Representatives from each university then shared these products and services in a breakout session. Students reported an interest in the environment, sustainable proteins and unique designs. Some products highlighted included washable grocery bags, alternative protein sources and silicone cups with quirky designs.

Future Employers: My generation is looking for employers with passion and purpose. By interacting with my peers and speaking to many companies, it was clear that employers with a mission and excitement were most popular. Students are also increasingly looking for employers who will invest time to develop their associates. I commonly hear from my peers, “I want flexibility in my career.” Students are looking for employers that can provide a variety of experiences and roles.

Final Takeaways: NGA 2020 was an awesome experience I would recommend to anyone interested in the grocery industry. I learned about the network of people involved in getting the product to the shelf and developed a deeper interest in all the steps that must occur along the way. If I had one piece of advice on how to appeal to my generation it would be, “Share your passion and purpose.” Thank you, NGA 2020, for an unforgettable time!
