NGA and FMS Release 2020 Independent Grocers Financial Survey
This week, NGA and FMS released the 2020 Independent Grocers Financial Survey, a joint study which determined 2019 was a strong year for independents.
“Alongside the important role in feeding America’s communities, the current pandemic has illustrated the agility and resiliency of independent grocers. As the supermarket industry continues to navigate these changes, independent grocers are in a unique position to find innovative and creative ways to better serve their customers,” said NGA President & CEO Greg Ferrara.
The key findings include:

- Inventory Management Played a Big Role
- Labor Market Caused Higher Turnover
- Rise in Profits due to Stellar Performance Among Profit Leaders
- Reinvesting in Stores and E-commerce Was Crucial to Pandemic Success

Justin Kizilos Wins Minnesota Best Bagger Competition
Over the weekend, the Minnesota Grocers Association held its annual bagging championship. Justin Kizilos of Kowalski’s Grand Avenue Market won the top prize while Michael MacDonald of Jubilee Foods Mound came in a second.

NGA Applauds Inclusion of Grocery in Trucking Hours of Service Waiver Extension
The updated waiver allows for commercial drivers transporting “food, paper products and other groceries for emergency restocking of distribution centers or stores” to be eligible for hours of service relief. The current emergency declaration was set to expire this Friday, August 14, but the extension will provide regulatory relief until September 14.
