The SNAP EBT Modernization Technical Assistance Center (SEMTAC) supports grocers as they make electronic benefits more accessible to the communities they serve.

By integrating eCommerce, chip cards, and mobile payments technology, grocers can offer SNAP EBT participants ways to shop more conveniently and securely, bringing home the healthy food choices we all need to thrive.

SEMTAC is a partnership of the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and the National Grocers Association Foundation. Our team of industry experts provides free one-on-one support and other resources to businesses pursuing FNS modernization initiatives.

SNAP Online Purchasing Program

While your business can grow through SNAP Online, the multiphase application process takes time and resources. SEMTAC’s experts can explain the USDA’s requirements and help you take the best next steps. Learn more

EBT Chip Card Technology

Much like traditional credit and debit cards, SNAP EBT technology is quickly transitioning from cards with magnetic stripes to cards that also include a chip, which greatly enhances security. Grocers will need to reach out to their POS providers to plan for the transition. Learn more

SNAP Mobile Payments

Mobile payment methods—like tapping or scanning a smartphone—will be available for SNAP participants in Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Oklahoma in the next few years, as an alternative to a physical SNAP card. More states will follow soon! Learn more
