Las Vegas, NV- 115 attendees of the National Grocers Association (NGA) 2013 Show, being held at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, woke up bright and early this morning to contribute to a great cause. The Women Grocers of America (WGA) 5k Fun Run/Walk, presented by the Kellogg Company, gave participants an opportunity to join in this inaugural non-competitive, healthy activity. Notable participants included runner Peter Larkin, President & CEO of NGA, and the coordination efforts of WGA members. The male winner was Ted Balistreri, President of Sendik's Food Market, and Lindsey Higgins, Assistant Professor for Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, was the female winner. All event proceeds went to the Mary Macey Scholarship Fund, dedicated to providing educational and professional opportunities for individuals in the independent grocery industry. All Show attendees had the opportunity to attend the Monday General Session, "Growth Opportunities for Independents: Four Major Trends," presented by The Coca-Cola Company. Theaudience discovered how retailers and manufacturers are enhancing their capabilities to meet the competitive environment through four emerging trends - the new consumer mindset, technology enhanced shopping, online encroachment, and format and merchandising innovation. The session provided the audience with creative new ways to differentiate their company from the competition, as well as tangible takeaways for enhancing business development.
Attendees crowded the halls to be among the first to enter the NGA EXPO Floor, which opened today. The show floor, which sold out in a record time, features a wide variety of products and solutions for the independent grocer. In addition, through the co-location of the North American Meat Association (NAMA)'s MEATEXPO 13, attendees are able to see highlights from the suppliers of the meat industry. The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) is also once again hosting a Produce Pavilion on the EXPO Floor, expanded to include over 3,000 feet of produce vendors. The floor is open from 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday and in a change for 2013, 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, allowing attendees and exhibitors time to maximize their networking and relationship building.
