USDA Meat Nutrition Labeling

Meat Labeling Update

Effective March 1, 2012 grocers must post nutritional fact posters for the top muscle cuts of beef, veal, poultry, pork, and lamb.  Additionally, packages of ground or chopped meat must include nutritional information on the package.  Exemptions apply for companies with less than 500 total employees (full and part-time) and that sell (annually) less than 100,000 lbs of a produce line (i.e. 80/20 ground beef).

NGA Releases Guide to the USDA Final Rule for Nutritional Labeling of Ground or Chopped Meat and Poultry Products and Single Ingredient Products

The USDA issued a final regulation that requires mandatory nutritional labeling on individual packages of ground or chopped meat and poultry products, effective beginning March 1, 2012. To help our members understand the regulation further, NGA has created a Resource Guide that breaks down the final rule and includes relevant Questions and Answers from the USDA's website that was posted on June 9, 2011. If you have questions or comments, you may contact Greg Ferrara or Tom Wenning.
