There are many reasons to own your own business; the independence of working for yourself, financial security and the pursuit of a dream. However, all business owners leave their businesses at some point, voluntarily or otherwise. What most don’t do is plan on how they are going to successfully exit the business. This session will focus on how business owners can use a process that is completely based on their goals: (1) the date they want to leave their companies; (2) the amount of money they need when they leave; and (3) the successor they choose to carry on after they leave. During the presentation, business owners will learn how to: structure their business to attract buyers, sell a business to family members or employees and still get the cash they need, decrease the time and risks it takes to get their money from a sale. Overall you will learn how to sell to transition your business when you want and get the income you need.

Numerous suppliers and retailers have already taken the lead in promoting social accountability/sustainability in the food industry. One of the challenges is how to encourage more companies in the grocery industry to see the value and follow suit. There has been greater public awareness of environmental issues, global warming, pesticides and organics. Furthermore, some companies have been role models in giving back to the community in the form of disaster relief and financial support to local charities. Making a connection with the community is the strength of the independent retailer. In this session, you will learn how the grocery industry can improve its strategy in this area to implement programs and establish high standards relative to social accountability and sustainability.
